Feminism is a collection of social theories, political movements, and moral philosophies largely motivated by or concerned with the liberation of women. A large portion of feminists are especially concerned with the social, political and economic inequality between the sexes which favors the male gender; some have argued that gendered and sexed identities, such as "man" and "woman", are socially constructed. Feminists disagree over the sources of inequality, how to attain equality, and the extent to which gender and gender-based identities should be questioned and critiqued. In simple terms, feminism is the belief in social, political and economic equality of the sexes, and a movement organized around the belief that gender should not be the pre-determinant factor shaping a person's social identity or socio-political or economic rights.

Modern feminist political activists commonly campaign on issues such as reproductive rights, including the right to safe, legal abortion, access to contraception and quality prenatal care, protection from violence within a domestic partnership, sexual harassment, street harassment, discrimination and rape, and rights to maternity leave, and equal pay. Many feminists today argue that feminism is a grass-roots movement that seeks to cross boundaries based on social class, race, culture and religion. They also argue that an effective feminist movement should be culturally specific and address issues relevant to the women of the society in question such as female genital cutting in Africa and the Middle East and the "glass ceiling" issue in developed economies. They also debate the extent to which certain societal issues such as rape, incest and mothering are universal. Themes explored in feminism include patriarchy, stereotyping, sexual objectification and oppression.

The people who are scared of feminism like most things in the world are those that do not understand it.

Feminism has no easy explaination...The best I can tell you is that it is a refusal by women to act in the male-enforced roles of wife/mother/homemaker. A feminist is any woman who has ever wanted to play sports, have a career, or fight for a cause. I am not sure that there is a woman who ISN'T a feminist in some way, these days. Common misconceptions are that to be a feminist you must be a lesbian, have hairy legs and armpits, or e a vegetarian...the truth is that you only have to be able to think for yourself and not follow the path that others would choose for you.

Broadly, feminism is the belief that all genders and sexes should be treated equally. That is offered the same opportunities and not discriminated against for their gender/sex. This has largely grown into equality for everyone, every single person and each difference between them. So basically if you think people should be treated the same eg. men should be able to be a stay at home dad if they wish to and women should be able to have a successful career and/or a family if they wish to. So yes:MEN AND WOMEN ALIKE CAN BE FEMINISTS. So basically if you think it is right for men and women (all people even!) to be treated equally and fair then congrats! you are a feminist. if not... then why?

People are afraid of it because of extremely vocal militant feminists that do not want equality but ratger supremacy, not all feminsts are like this mind you, but the ones who get the most press are, and it reflects badly on the movement in genral, think that not all muslims are terrorists but the terrorists get the most press so it creates fear of the entire group, same thing
