RAM is the memory your computer uses when it needs to store information temporarily, or when it needs to actually do something with information. For instance, the program you're using right now to read this is using the RAM memory to run the program and display this text.
On a rubbish computer with 128 MB of RAM, I'd probably not bother upgrading the RAM, because you can get a newer computer pretty cheaply. If you did upgrade the RAM, it would have to be a certain type of RAM, and the type of RAM would depend on the type of motherboard in the computer. Given that you have 128 MB of RAM, I'm guessing the computer's around 6 to 8 years old, making it likely that you'd need SDRAM, which is still relatively expensive. Once you get it, it's pretty easy to fit, as long as you get the right type of RAM.

RAM stands for Ram Access Memory. It is hardware that your computer uses to hold the programs and files you are currently running on your PC.
Because your processor runs many times faster then your hard drive, your computer will load the program(s) you are running - such MS Word or your email editor - into the RAM memory along with the document(s) you are working on. It can access RAM memory much faster than it can access the hard drive. The more RAM memory you have, the more programs you can run at the same time, and the more documents (pictures, music, e-mail, etc) you can have open.
If there is not enough RAM memory, then Windows has to keep moving programs and documents between RAM and the hard drive. You have probably seen this many times. You are working in a document, and you scroll down and all the sudden everything stops for a few seconds. After a pause, you are then able to scroll again. What happedned was you reached the end of what the computer had in its RAM memory, so it had to stop and copy that top part of the document out to make room for the bottom part of the document to come in to memory. Same thing when you click on a window and it takes several seconds (or minutes) to appear.
Adding additional memory will greatly speed up those processes because the computer will be able to hold more programs and data files in it memory and not have to stop all the time to swap information between memory and hard drive (the slowest thing a computer does).
If you decide to purchase more RAM, you do have to get the correct type of RAM for your computer. If you look at the bottom of the chip, you will see that it has a couple "notches" in the chip. Those will match with "tabs" in the memory slots. You have to have memory were the slots and the tab match up. (Easy way to keep people from putting the wrong memory in their computer and possible damaging it).
Best way to get the memory is to take a stick of your existing memory into a good computer store. They will be able to match it with the correct memory for your computer.

Random Access Memory is temporary memory that is used when the computer is on and lost as soon as you turn it off. It is primarily used to take pressure off of your chip, so the more ram you have, the faster your machine will work.
O.K. Now the the cheap way to speed up your machine without buying another strip of RAM: House keep your machine.
Go into your C drive files and select a folder called Windows. Go to Temporary Internet Files and delete everything in this folder, but not the folder itself. Now do the same for Cookies.
Look at the amount of space that you have on your hard drive (Go through my computer and just click on the C drive.
If you do not have 1/3 of your drive space free, remove some of your older programs until you do.
Go to Start, Run. Type in defrag and press enter.
This may take some tiem if you have not done this for a while, but it is essential for what I am going to ask you to do next.
Once Finished, return to the Start, My computer.
Select Control Panel and click on Performance and Maintenance.
Select System, Advanced Performance, Performance - Settings
Now select Advanced and Virtual Memory Usage
Altering the settings on this will allow you to use sections of your C drive as RAM (Which is why I asked you to clean your drive with Defrag.).
Change the minimum (Initial) size setting - try 2000 to start and alter via trial and error. Once the Min Max levels have been set, exit and restart your computer.
This will speed up your computer, but remember to defrag regularly.
Luck

Yeah I know people have already said it but you need a new computer altogether. its just not worth upgrading the RAM because if its 128MB chances are the rest of the computer's components are really old too......if you upgraded the RAM the computer would not go much faster because the rest of the computer is probably real old. you should get a new computer with at least 512MB RAM (higher if you like playing computer games). Also, there is a new type of RAM called DDR2 that you should get, though it would make a new computer a little more expensive [you can not put DDR2 RAM into an old computer].

OMG get a new computer - I doubt that you will be able to upgrade something that only has 128MB, as the memory type will either be too old, or the motherboard will not handle much more.
RAM is used by the computer to hold everything it is working on at the moment - the more you have, the less the computer has to spill over onto the hard drive, the faster it is.
