It was mostly spoken by East European Jews before the Holocaust (esp. Poland that had the second largest Jewish population after the USA) where many Jews lived in their own communities. It has now become a rare language after many of its speakers were killed and their communities destroyed. It is not the main language spoken in Israel, that is Hebrew, and Yiddish is a totally different language that contains some Hebrew words but is more similar to German (as it originated in Germany). Most Jews speak the main language of their country as their first language.Yiddish is still spoken in some very traditional Jewish communities in different countries.

In secular Jewish communities. It's not the sole language spoken, obviously, but lots of families speak it at home.
