Yeah, why? They should've been called a hottie or a warmie coz they keep you warm. Ok, warmer will do but I like the hottie more.

We wear sweaters when the weather is a bit cold, right? Commonly, sweaters have bundles of fibers that traps the hot air inside our body so that the cold air won't get inside. The more our body produces hot air, the more pores will open up in our skin. These pores excrete water, salt and more air (generally known as sweat) that our body takes in -- in the first place.
To summarize things up, sweaters are named after to what they do: sweat (waste that comes out from skin pores) and -er (meaning: someone/something that produces, does or adds the amount of).
So 'sweater' literally means 'a garment that produces sweat.'
hope this helps.

I don't know. Sweaters keep us warm so there was no point in calling it a sweater in the first place.

There is ntohing called as cold. The absence of heat is only cold. When the surrounding temperature around our body is hot we sweat. whereas, if it is cold we dont. The cloth we wear to amke us feel warm, due to which we sweat is a cloth that makes us sweat that was named as sweater.
