yes, I'm 47 have had it for 9 months for heavy periods - have 2 kids.
For me there was a brief pain when it was inserted, wouldn't call that a problem really - I found out afterwards that some health professionals recommend taking a couple of, ie ibuprofen, a couple of hours prior to insertion, and in the USA some even use general anaesthesia for insertion (but that's what you get with private medicine maybe?)
Had some period-type pains for a few hours afterwards, not severe, and a few days after I had half an hour of stronger pain and wondered if I was going to reject it, which is a possibility. But it's still there.
Okay - had light bleeding almost every day following for 3 months (they tell you to expect a settling-down p[eriod of 3-6 months) then periods became very light but still only 7-10 days without some amount of blood loss, quite inconvenient
Only had one episode of heavy bleeding , (see my question) - which was VERY inconvenient and a little worrying. It's still there though.
My breasts grew a cup size and are VERY tender and sometimes lumpy (also a bit worrying till I had it checked out by GP) before 'periods'
My migraines (I already had them) got worse (see my question).
As well as my breast increase I think I've gained a few pounds generally but not excessive
Other than that - fine, and apparently it's excellent contraception if that's why you want it
But I'd advise you to find out as much as you can before going ahead - and if you haven't had children it could be pretty painful to have inserted from what I read on other sites.

I had the mirena coil fitted in 2003 after years of horrible periods and trying other ways of making things better. It took two attempts to get it in and I've had 3 kids! finally the Doc had to use an "introducer" (a long plastic rod that stretches your cervix open!!) and GTN spray (the stuff people use for angina attacks as it relaxes your muscles) and she got it in , I went into cervical shock and had to have a week of work, it felt like I had major surgery! After 3 weeks I was still in pain, bleeding and I went mad . My husband marched me down the doc's and demanded they took it out there and then which they did, I felt better very quickly after that. So no my experience with Mirena was not that good . I went on to have a hysterectomy and have never looked back. I'm 38 now.

Hi I am 38 years old with four kids and had the mirena coil inserted november 2005. The doctor suggested this because of my heavy periods. It was a bit painful when inserted and had quite a lot of bleeding after that for a while. I had it in for 10 months. With me this did not work as I continued having heavy periods and had to have a hysterectomy this past november but if you want it for contraception it is quite reliable. Many of my friends have it and since day one their periods have disappeared and are quite happy. Unfortunately I was not one of those lucky ones but you go ahead like I said every body is different.

hi, ought to confess i've got not got the Mirena version (i wanted the single devoid of the hormones) yet I do have the coil geared up (for the final 2 yrs) and it is super, relatively crampy abdomen on installation, purely a quick twinge (take Ibuprofen a million/2 hr till now your appt) 2 relatively crampy classes afterwards, and now certainly brill do no longer understand that's there, might definately advise it. wish this facilitates p.s I had concern with the pill earlier , and opt to appreciate that any hormones circulating are my own, plenty greater efficient now than whilst on pill , I used to have consistent issues, on no account realised they have been down tio the pill till I got here off !

I have had Mirena for 6 months now. I have had 5 kids........had no pain at all getting it inserted. Had it inserted 3rd day of my period. Period stopped...........haven't had a real period since getting it. Only side effect I have had is spotting on and off a lot. Right now I'm on my longest stretch without any spotting so hopefully my IUD has settled in and that won't be an issue any more. I love it............I'm very happy that I got it.

I had it but not for long. Had bad pains day after it was fitted. Thought they would go away but they didn't. Had to have it removed, and all the doctor said was I was the unlucky 1 in 25 people it was no good for. Good luck if you go for it.
