It's okay as long as the practitioner is qualified and it's not done to excess.

The pain -- if it occurs -- is typically cramping in nature and not severe.

The embarrassment is pretty subjective and there are those who don't mind having (or giving) the procedure at all.

Others who receive the procedure are reticent to surrender to their modesty but the practitioner should be sensitive to the situation and provide for drapes as required.

By and large properly performed colonic is effective for cleansing the large bowel and will not be painful nor embarrassing in the presence of an experienced and ethical person administering it.

Hydrochloric therapy should never be painful. If it is, stop the process immediately and leave. The benefits of cleaning out your colon are too extensive to list. Most of the toxins in the body leave through the colon. When the colon is plugged up the toxins set up home in your body. This is an invitation for dis-ease. Getting your waste management system working well is the first step in healing your body. Imagine trying to sweep dirt out of the house with the doors closed. Nothing leaves so the house just get dirtier. If you feel the need to have a colonic consider why you feel the need to do this. If your plugged up there are other things to think about. What caused the problem and what can you do about it. Look at the whole digestive system, including the mouth. Its a long pipe that has different functions. I don't want to write a book here. Natural health experts recommend colonic irrigation as a way to cleanse your colon from the toxins that have accumulated in your body. Yes...it's true, it can be embarassing but you should not feel that way. If you are under the hands of a skilled practitioner, there may be some discomfort but there should be little pain.

Colon cleansing is supposed to bring about many benefits such as improved skin, clear allergies, reduce bloating, etc.

its basically a big enema. They put water up the back end, and you poop alot. Your body cleanses itself- you dont really need a colonic. There aren't any benefits unless you are constipated and can't poop. People who are desparate to lose weight have colonics, but really all you are doing is losing poo- its kindof silly if you ask me. Spend your money on something worth your while, like a cool new outfit or hairdoo.

Unnecessary and potentially dangerous. The irrigation (washing out with warm water and chemicals) strips out all the beneficial bacteria and can lead to long term problems. Its a waste of money. Its uncomfortable, and I should think highly embarrassing;
