If it is complete (100%) dark not even a cat or an owl would be able to see a thing. We need at least some amount of light to see.

If it's completely dark, then no. The eye's got a number of ways of improving your sight when there's not much light though. First of all the pupil opens up to let as much light as possible in - this happens quite quickly. The other thing that happens is a chemical called visual purple builds up in the eye, making it more sensitive to light - this takes at least 20 minutes. The light sensitive part of the eye is called the retina, and it's covered in cells called rods and cones. The rods are more sensitive, so they're the ones that work in low light levels, but they don't see colour.

Oh, btw, carrots don't help.

After our eyes get accustomed to the dark, we can see about 40% in the dark. When first, plunged into sudden dark-ness, we are un-able to see, after a few seconds we are able to make out a few objects in the dark. This is a classic example of how man must have adapted and survive in adverse conditions in pre-history.

The eye works with light, you, and every animal with eyes can see to some degree until the darkness is absolute, that means that no amount of light is being reflected to the eyes. all things can see in some degree of darkness depending of the amount of light circulating the enviorment, the cats are more sensitive to light than humans do, so they can see better in low light conditions, and see when the light is so low that a human wouldn't see anything.

a lot of good answers and even some that may require their own questions/answers....keeping it simple....to be seen an object must reflect light...so there needs to be a light source, so no complete dark. One answer given that mentions the cat or owl is completely correct, no light no vision for anything...Nocturnal vision describes how well something can see in low light, not NO light.

If dark you are talking about is defined as "in the absent of light" then we cannot see in the dark.

We can only see in the so called "dark" when there is light around !!!

People from the West usually can't because we are so used to light bulbs and so on. But people who are living in a 'authentic' world are used to darkness. They actually need only the shining stars to have a clear view of a landscape. They won't read books though.

Unlike some animals, our eyes are not capable of Nocturnal vision. Thats why we cant see in the dark. No matter how much you take care of your eye and no matter how many carrots you eat, the basic design of the inner eye is not gonna change. Proper nourishment and diet will keep our body (including Vision) in healthy condition but seeing in dark....well...we cant. I mean...we cant with our naked eye but thats why we have technology to help us, which aids in seeing in dark through Night Vision Goggles.

Yes we can but not very well.
After an initial period of time for our eyes to adjust to the low levels of light in the dark, there is always enough light to reflect into our eyes to distinguise shapes.
In total blackness, though, when there is no light at all, we cannot see no.

We can see any object just because the reflection of light rays by that object.
Means whene the light reflected by that object and that rays come to our eyes and than by the proccess of our eyes we can see that thing only.
So if there is completely dark and not any light is there we can't see in.
