Same people, different name....
"Lakota" is the name the people call themselves. Lakota, Dakota and Nakota are all the same with the exception of area and dialect of language.
"Sioux" is the name given to the Lakota people by the Ojibwe. It means snake.
Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull were Lakota. The Lakota (along with Cheyenne) were the ones at the Battle of the Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee.
As for calling people Native Americans or Indians, the author above is not exactly right. It's NOT ok to call all Native people Indians. Some are offended by it. Don't call my family Indian! It comes from Columbus and we won't stand for it! It's also confusing with people from India. He should speak only for himself and not say it's ok to call all Natives that.
The proper thing to call a Native person is by their Nations name, whether that be Lakota, or Ojibwe or Cheyenne etc.
A decent site on the naming of the Lakota and other info is at http://www.crystalinks.com/sioux.html
There is a Lakota language group on Yahoo at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lakhotaiyapi/
A brief intro to Lakota culture and history is at http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/history/mncultures/lakota.html

As far as my understanding goes...
"Sioux," used by the French, comes from part of a longer Ojibwa word Nadouessioux (or similar). This term refers to the "Sioux" as snakes, as they and the Ojibwa were old enemies. Because it is not what they call themselves, the word is not well regarded.
The proper names for the "Sioux," their own name that means something closer to friends or allies, is Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota.
The difference in the L, D, and N is in the dialect of the language they speak. They are all one people, just different tribes within their Nation and different dialects.

It's okay to call us Indians. That's what we are and we are proud to be one as well. Indians in early years, lived in Family units, units problably around 20-40 and others would break off for one reason or another. Still, other than for some Ceremony reasons. we are all the same. In those days we would scuffle amoungst each other, never kill one another only wound another. It's a little differant if your a Northern Indian and a Southern Indian, only because they would live so far apart. At that time we didn't know there were any other Ethnics groups in the world. Today it's more about who is more pretty!! Ha HA
