My toilet cistern (ceramic) has a hairline crack in it and water is escaping in tiny droplets. I am tring to avoid replacing it as it is close-coupled. 2 questions - can I repair the crack with any substance on the inside? Is it difficult ot match-up a close-coupled cistern?

Silicone sealant is probably the best way to repair the inside, although this will perish over time. If you need to replace the cistern you will need to know the make of the wc and if you take the lid off the cistern there should be a number stamped on the underside of it (or sometimes in the cistern itself), go along to a plumbers merchants with this number and they can match the cistern for you.

Hope this helps

Try www.sta.co.uk or .com
They are a company called second time around and specilaisein discontinued sanitary ware they are based outside bedford and also do mail order.
You could also try turning water off draining cistern and repairing with silicon sealer but the cistern must be dry.
also connecting a new cistern is not difficult but remember to have new parts ie connecting donut and connecting plate as the old one may well be corroded and you will hace to cut off
If you are replacing cistern it is advisable to replace syphon at the same time cost is next to nothing and you can obtain all parts from a good plumbing store. i dont mean b&q
pts. ridgeons etc lastly good luck.

after emptying and drying the cistern, a mix of traditional araldite will do the job - you know, the 2 part resin glues.

Overlap the crack on the inside of the cistern with a 6mm bead of the stuff and firm in with a spatula. it'll look a bit naff ( but its on the inside so who cares ), but be watertight for ever.

You are right, its quite difficult to match up a new cistern to an existing pan. Not impossible but you'd need to take the cistern around all the plumbers merchants. and the "white" is likely to not match

To repair I would Waite until you go on holiday just before you go empty the cistern when you get back it will be bone dry. This is what I did a couple of years ago. to repair you will need to go to a tropical fish shop for a tube of silicon this is totally waterproof as fish tanks are made with this it is also very strong and wont break down in water it takes about 24 hours to go off.

Yes and yes. A repair of the crack can be attempted if you can dry out the tank to do it. Turn off the water and empty the tank, using rags to get the last water out of the bottom. Let everything dry out completely (use a hair dryer to speed this step). Apply a thin coat of silicon to the crack, be sure to overlap on sides and the length. Allow to cure and then try refilling. This usually works at least for a little while.
To replace your tank, measure the spacing of the hold down bolts and the width of the tank from the center of the hold down bolts to the end of the tank cover (or wall).
