I am a senior right now and get decent grades. I take AP classes and honors classes. My junior year i finished ap calculus, ap statistics, and ap english to name a few. I can probably get accepted to the school of my choice, the university of california of.... But however I have no idea waht i want to do. I have the grades to get into school, but would it be such a bad idea to go to a junior college and then transfer? I mean i'd be saving myself lots of money and time to figure out my plan. However therse that chance of not getting in. I just feel that if i go to the college, i'll be taking intro courses and just work that i could do at a JC and im not exactly well off to be throwing money away. im just in the middle. So my quesiton is: if i get into the school of my choice, would it be a bad idea to give it up an go to a JC then transfer? Im just curious...

thanks for all the answers. i also have a leading question into how easy would it be to go from JC to a good school. Im not talking Harvard or anything, but something you'd need to have above a 4.0 in hs.

But anyways thanks alot everyone, for now im going to talk to the local community college people here in a few weeks and also the counselors at my school later in the year for advice. for now my plan is the community college, but i want as many resources as i can get so i do not make a mistake.

sounds like you have a good idea already. A juco is a good place to start if you're not sure. And yes, you'll be taking Gen. Eds. starting off, so why not pay a cheaper fee like at a juco. Make sure they are transferrable though. My opinion is that it's easier to get into a University from a juco rather than highschool. And you're not giving up going to the University. It'll always be there and just because you may decide on not going right now, doesn't mean you will not be accepted later. My belief is Juco for Gen. eds because it's cheaper, Bachelors at a mediocre 4 year university, then masters and above at a major university....if you plan on all of that. It'll save you alot of money in the long run, and smaller schools starting out tend to have smaller classes with more hands on from the instructor instead of just a big 350 psychology class with you sitting at the top row barely seeing the teacher and getting your assignments off the internet. The teacher actually knows your name without looking at smaller colleges.

If you are not on scholarship, bypass the university for now.

Your first two years of college are general studies. What a waste of time it really is.

Would you rather spend $150 per class at community college, or $500+ for the same class at the university? No one ever asks if your GPA is from the same college or not.

MAKE SURE the university you want to transfer credits to, will accept those from that community college. Conversely, make sure the C.C. classes are transfer college classes. For instance, ours has a 10 digit code: XXX-300-XXXX the middle numbers are university equivelent to a 300 level class and transferable. If it is lower, it is a waste of time and money.

Go to C.C. first and then transfer. You will be better off.

Go to an accredited four year college and take only the basics the first year (math, history, english, etc.). Lots of college freshman and even sophomores do not know what they want to major in yet. Give yourself time to really know what you want and go for it. Good luck!
