exactly what it says... When a certain thing happens that lets you know to do your thing, Like in acting when a certain line is read( the cue) it may be a lead for someone else to do or say something.

in performance, a "cue" is the line in a play or a movie that is your sign to start your line or some certain action. For example, you might be in a play, and when a certain character says "Where is he?" that's your "cue" to come out onto the stage. People use it in every day conversation now to tell people "hey, there is a certain thing I would expect you to do or say at this moment"

This is more of a phrase...

It means, "Hey, you are supposed to be fulfilling some sort of obligation, pal..."

or

theatrically,

"It is your line."

or,

if a girl is giving you all the right signals to take her back to your pad...it is your conscience forcing you to say,

"Check please!" with a smile.
