We yawn because are oxygen levels are too low.
When we yawn your alertness is increased due to the sudden intake of oxygen. This increases the heart rate...gets rid of the carbon dioxide built up in our lungs and bloodstream...and forces oxygen through blood vessels to the brain. Yawning helps to restore normal breathing and ventilates our lungs.
So when we are all feeling tired we un-noticeably breathe more slowly...yawning boosts our oxygen levels and gives our bodies a little boost!

Yawning has several messages...we yawn in order to take in more oxygen as an indication that our brain has "oxygen want" or low level of oxygen. It also occurs when we are sleepy, our body's mechanism telling us to rest and sleep. Yawning also indicates boredom. The better question i guess is: Why does yawning appears contagious?
I think yawning is not only common among humans...cats and felines even dogs yawn! Do fish yawn, too?

We yawn when our body is in a relaxed mood, so our body needs more oxygen so when you yawn you take more oxygen then normal time and this amount you take help your blood Cycle for about 10~15 min. So yawning is like an activation code =]

Hi, it was a mystery to me as well since I yawned quite a bit, especially in meetings when you are really suppose to be listening. I found my own cure on this. Breathing deeply seemed to work and I have since found out that yawning increases the oxygen supply to the lungs.
My answer then is we yawn to increase our oxygen supply.

We yawn when we are getting bored. It is bassically our brain identifying that it is not able to understand something effectively and tries to throtle up its information processing speed by access intake of oxygen.
Once you yawn, suddenly the things do seem a lot clearer as the brain now has received the extra oxygen it needs to process things more quickly.

Yawning is actually a lack of oxygen. The reason we do it more when we are tired is because our body is more relaxed and takes in less oxygen.
