I've had several garage sales. They can be kind of hit or miss because the weather affects the turnout. Advertise in your local paper and put signs out around your neighborhood (don't forget to take them down when it's over). I wouldn't put your phone number in the ad or on the signs, but make sure your address is in there. In your ad name some of the items for sale that you think will be especially attractive. Also in the ad, mention that it's for a benefit. Popular items are CD's and DVD's, books, furniture, kids' clothing, collectibles, housewares, computers and software - especially games that are still good for the latest operating system. Before the sale, tag everything. I use those little round colored stickers you can get in office supply stores. During the sale, have plenty of change and singles available, be willing to negotiate prices, and be friendly and courteous. Also, wash any clothing or other household items ahead of time, run a dustrag over the other stuff, and keep your sale items neat.

People who go to garage sales expect things to be cheap. If you put your prices too high, people will only get something if they really really want it. If you make stuff cheap, people are more likely to get things they don't need. People like to think they are getting a deal.

Putting out boxes with everything in it being the same price is a good idea because people get in there and shuffle through the box to see if there's anything good.

If you live in a pretty big city you can advertise it for free on craigslist. They have a whole section for garage sales. That would also be a good place to look to see how people are pricing big things like furniture in your area.

What to do: Place an ad in the paper regarding the date, time, items (estate/general) and a rain date if possible. Make some flyer's up and post them within a 5-10 mile radius with the above info with on a bright poster board.

Think of the items up for sale would go for a fair market price. i.e. 2003 32" TV great condition for $50-60 US dollars. It could always help to have refreshments on hand to keep your buyers around. Try doing your garage sale on a weekend, Sundays could be even better.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Just price everything as you would for a regular garage sale, post signs &/or place an add saying....
"Charity Garage Sale. All proceeds will go to (whatever reason) Additional donations are being excepted"
or something to that effect. Also ask others to lend a hand or to donate sale items as well ~ a bake sale combinded with your garage sale may work well also

The word of the day is 'haggle'. Haggle: an instance of intense bargaining. You'll have to be willing to haggle over price.

The word of the day is also 'organization': Organization: a structure for arranging or classifying. You'll want to make sure specific areas are marked out for specific prices. Use tables, towels, tablecloths, whatever, to designate seperate areas.

And make sure to use SIGNS marking the given price of these areas...and make sure to mark these things for MORE than the price you're ACTUALLY looking for. This ensures you'll most likely get a better deal from someone whose willing to haggle, and an even better deal from someone willing to pay your upmarked price.

And it couldn't hurt to take a few semi-ethical tips on aquisition from my favorite fictional capitalists. See my source link for their advice on buisness in general.
