that really, since they were invented they haven't changed much. Still deterministic machines processing ones and zeroes. Back then it was very clear that only skilled and trained engineers could work on these.

However, we have added a layer of eye-candy and icons and menus and pointers so now every joe sixpack THINKS he can work with a computer.

Take a look at the computer section and the questions you get on this very site and you will know that this is not so.

Thas the computer has not been treated as its been deveolped...as a monopoly to the consumer and more wasnt done earlier to fix the problem of Microsoft bullying the marketplace. Bill Gates has gotten filthy rich developing a system that, though flawed, is used world wide for computers to communicate. Only recently has the government gotten involved to stem the lackluster response service companies like netscape and norton get when they try to get source codes to provide needed service alternatives to microsoft.
Microsofts attitude when working with these service companies can be most politely described as deplorable and if you want to see the basis of the goverments suit against microsoft, sit on the phone with them with a valid purchased coa for your computer and see what crap you go through just trying to activate that.
Im all for capitalism but computers are going down a slippery slope when it comes to being a public convenience and not a one horse town with microsoft at the helm.
