i would like to know whats the best time to visit Leh. I plan to drive till Leh via Manali. I would like to avoid large crowds so would prefer to go in lean period. Also i want it to be as cold as possible.

I think the 2 valleys mentioned above by rooie are lahaul and spiti. The roads open from July-Oct and that's the time when we can pass via rohtang pass at manali.

Check out the Indiamike.com forums and you will get A-Z info on the same.

nice, I did it on an enfield last juli. amazing!
the road is closed from around oktober to june, depends on the weather and from manali to leh you are only able to sleep in two places, tents which get set up in the season, in the winter there is nothing. So there is not really much room to avoid the crowd, if there is any.
Leh is busy,june-okt, but most people fly, or take the bus, the road wasn't busy.
I drove from delhi, and instead of going straight to manali, which most people do I took a detour trough two valley's, unfortunately I forgot the name, but it takes you wright near the chinese border. NOBODY the whole day.
After leh, you can also go further, that's the highest pass, after that pass (cold!!) there is dessert.
