joinging EU has more to do with law reararrangement and setting new pricipals/bringing up new values - so the impact would be mostly on gross economy and politics; but there are few things ordinary man would benefit from as well -
-clear regulations on public health/ food examination/vet pratice etc - legal permission to work oustide his/her own country earning more money there (it counts especially if you are from the poorer part of EU)
- donation for regional bussines development/ roads/schools/hospitals ...
- EU stipend/scholarschip programs - EURES/PHARE/Marie Curie fellowships and many others
These are mostly indirect benefits, but sooner or later everyone will find being a member of EU beneficial...Especially if you are from such countries as Poland, latvia, Slovakia, Romania and all others not so wealthy countries

Membership in the EU means better in trade relation for the member countries but not exactly placing money into the pocket of a citizen. The effect is national in nature but no direct effect in the individual.

No, it has taken money out to pay for another layer of politicians who have the time to vote on such burning issues as the straightness of bananas and whether we should be drinking pints or half-litres.

Also, we are paying for the common agricultural policy which props up the entire French economy. The rest of the union works itself into the ground while the French complain and blockade ports when they are actually asked to work more than an hour a week.

the eu has done nothing for the man in the street
only stupid laws have been put in place like how a tomato should look and where the potatoes of europe should be grown.

and which country should be friendly to which country and which country is considered hostile.

the american dictate what the eu ppl should or should not do, period.
