I think you would be ale to do something if you have the ability to remove the hard drive from the laptop. You can put it in your desktop PC (with an adapter) and copy the installer files over. I had a quick look on the net and found a couple of forums discussing similar problems. See below:-

OPTION1: Did u try using windows xp's system restore function? If it was enabled then u should have restore checkpoints created on your system just recover to previous state at which windows xp was working fine. If u dont know how to launch the system restore application then here are the steps. Go to Start>>All progams>>Accessories>>Sysytem Tools>(Then finally)System restore. Just launch the application and recover to previous saved point.
OPTION2: Most of the mainboards these days have the capabilities to boot from a usb drive so just read the manual of your laptop to see if your laptop supports this fuction. If YES then u will be able to boot your usb CD/DVD drive into dos even if its plugged into USB.
Peace out!

It would have been good right about now if you had an image to restore via USB mass storage device, but thats not happening. I'd go with ripping the hard drive out and attaching it as a Slave to another computer and fiddle with it there. Also, you can get an external CD-Rom if your computer supports booting off USB devices.

OK. when you start the computer, just after pressing the button to start the computer keep pressing "del" button on the keyboard until you see a bright blue screen. after opening that screen you need to check all the tabs you can see on the screen. then when you find the first boot device selection point. Go to that point and press enter on the keyboard and use the arrow keys to select the appropriate selection you want to use. like if you want to boot your computer from USB port. select that point and press enter and if don't find it there, then you probably need to go ask somebody face to face who might help you more better but I hope these details will work. If you successfully do the above instructions the setup will start automatically and you can repair/reinstall windows XP.

you like to make things hard for yourself don't you?.......
you could take the hard drive out of your laptop and stick it in another and install that way and then put it back in yours. you will need your product key though.

You can try by going to the safemode of winxp. It's by pressing F8 while your computer boots. And then try to restore any old setting that worked properly

sorry i can't think of anything, i hope someone else can, but if it doesn't work, always salvage as much as you can from the laptop, such as the RAM
or you could hire a professional
