It seems like a tactic to get you to hunt through the magazine to see other stories and ads.

I figured it was because they didn't want you reading the cover story while standing in the checkout line, and then putting the magazine back. If you get to the cashier and you're still digging around for the cover story, you're more likely to buy the magazine.

That's my theory anyway.

absolutely! Look at how most of them have like 6 pages of ads before you can even find the table of contents, not to mention that that is usually more than one page and they are never sequential pages but all sandwhiched in subsequent ads.

The readers are an afterthought, just people targeted to spend money on a magazines real focus, the advetisers.

Theres a few thousand (10s of thousadn sometime) people paying 5-6 dollars a pop, those guys are spending 10s of thou on each page, god nows what the front and back gates cost nowadawys, and remember they can jack those ad prices waaay up any time they get a pic of a new branjalina offspring or some other big draw.

It sure seems like it. I know that if I pick up a mag while waiting in line at the check out counter I'll rarely be able to find the cover story article right away and thus not have enough time to skim the article.

I believe you are right. Some magazines bury the table of contents half way back in the magazine
