I was talking to the guy that lives above me the other day. He called that Landlord because we have a garbage problem here. some of the people don't put their garbage in the bins. Instead they thorw it in that general area. Every week on garbage day their is a huge mess. Well he said that they were going to start charging $20 if you don't put it in a bin or if you put it on your porch. I always set my garbage on the porch because their is so much crap by the bins i either have to climb over stuff the get to the bins or they are already full. Plus it is winter and cold, not like it smells. I don't have a problem walking it over to the bins, but can a landlord charge for that? It's not harming anyone. Also we have two bins per apartment, and they are small bins. I just don't think it is right.

I hate it when people don't read what was written. I am not to lazy to walk it over to the bins. And I wasn't manking any excuses for anything. I put my garbage on the porch because their is no where else to put it. Plus that way i am responsible for taking out my own garbage every week. But if the landlord is going to charge for that then I will put it in the piles that everyone else makes. But we will get charged for that too. The bins are always full. Within two days of the garbage being picked up they are full again. Their is 8 bins and three cans this is only a 4 family place. I don't know where all the garbage comes from.

I agree with all the previous answers..
Garbage, health issues , and someone may be dumping to your bins..
I have rental buildings......and I have to pay to have the garbage removed....and I have a limit to work in..which is..when my garbage exceeds what I already pay..I have to pay extra..
Point is.....when extra is being charged..will you be getting more removal dates..or extra bins..?
I usually make a point of finding out who is using the extra service..and it is usually someone with a new baby (those disposable diapers yuk..and they fill up the bins)..and I go and talk to the dumpers.......usually something is worked out.. and I am dealing with 6 families ..so someone with very little trash gives up some extra space..
anyhow trash..is expensive to have removed.........
my mother-in-law had..an agreement where she lived an they were to look after their own trash (take it to the dump themselves )...so someone may well be using your bins..
what if the bins were locked up......all trash left outside and the manager came and took it out to the bins.........
I keep all my bins..up , well on the land, and secured (you see bins not only attract animals, birds, bugs,etc. but also human..you see humans can use names on ads, checks, etc in the trash.. so you may have a dumpster diver looking through the trash..for credit,checks,etc)
I would want..them locked up
the one building a guy moved into the dumpster and set a little fire to keep warm and then bit the fireman when the fire department was called to put out the fire...(this was not the renters problem..but helped me realize how serious trash issues are).

Yes, you are living on their property and not yours. They are allowed to charge whatever is within reason to get the situation taken care of. As a matter of fact, they could be fined for the mess that is happening on their property. Stop making excuses because only lazy asses make excuses for having to walk a couple hundred feet, cold or whatever, and that is just, well, LAZY. If the bins are full, then that isn't your problem and just set your garbage gently beside the bins and notify the office that they or the garbage collectors aren't doing their job. Stop being lazy and using excuses or blaming others, you are part of the problem.

They can only charge you when they catch you. Kind of like getting a speeding ticket or something.

Option A: hurl your garbage into the bins or on top of them.

Option B: take your garbage to another location, there are tons of places you can take a little garbage and put it in a bin somewhere else.

Option C: figure out when trash begins to pile up and make a habit of throwing out your garbage before it piles up.

It sounds to me like someone else is coming into your complex and leaving their garbage. This can happen. Now all you have to do is catch them doing it!

The place must be a mess and the landlord is right to have a fit. It makes the place unsafe to live there and its their duty to ensure your safety. So it IS harmful and can be.

If it says in your lease that the landlord can fine you for improper disposal of trash or cluttering up the area, yes he can charge you. I feel it is his/her method to try and clean up the place!

Take your trash to where its suppose to be. You said its no problem, then you won't have to worry about the fines, right?

Then, if its not taken care of shortly and the trash is overwhelming, call the Health Department in your county and report it. Let your landlord answer to them and come up with a better solution.

As warm as its been, rats are still running around...it's all you need in your apartment...

Check your contract. Your landlord can do anything you've agreed to, whether you completely knew it or not. For a woman, that concept should be scary.

Trash left in a common area is not only a hassle for the property manager, it can actually pose a public health threat. I don't care much for laws, but in this case I'd say someone could be harmed by it (especially after Spring thaw).
