Can anyone explain some American terms? Where is "Downtown"? Surely does not just mean "South" ?

What is "Homecoming"?

downtown is usually the older business section of a town. the town's main street goes through it. Homecoming is a high school's celebration for the football season. they have a king and a queen and a court (usually the girls that didn't get elected queen). there is a big dance at the high school the night after the game. it's a little more formal than a regular dance, but not as formal as prom night.

Downtown is the central business district. It's usually in the middle of a city. Strangely, the southside is usually the poorer district.

Is not 'Downtown' the centre...and 'Uptown' being the leafy posh area well away from the 'common districts' (as in Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl?)
