New strategy?!

I do find it strange. Now I may not be the smartest cookie in the jar but I did go to university and I have read around and I can see there are many places in the world where stability is just hanging on by it's fingernails.

And here's GWB. An alumnus of two fine universities. Within a country where you can find some of the world's finest minds. And a security service whose information gathering capabilities dwarf everyone elses.

And yet US foreign policy repeatedly appears (from a European perspective at least) to lack understanding or planning. The phrase 'gung ho' comes to mind.

Just look at Somalia. An 'interim' government with a precarious hold on the country hardly needs US intervention or civilian casualties. And as for Iraq, it just feels as if there was absolutely no plan whatsoever as to what to do if and when Saddam was overthrown. The idea that democracy would just sweep into the area was naive in the extreme.

So as to the 'new' strategy, sadly I have little confidence it is any different from the 'old' one.

I think Bush will not succeed for the following reasons:
1.His proposals are old and not creative.
2.He neglected Baker&Hamilton study on Iraq which was practical and could solve essentional part of Iraqi problems.
3.The goal of Bush proposal is to resist the withdrawel from Iraq not solving its problems
4.Sending more troops will comolicate the political situation in Iraq.

the only options are very risky at best , total withdrawal from Iraq or let the military sort it as they see fit , any thing in between is going to result in another Vietnam type situation. Casualties for no gain and division at home (as is already happening)

Bush hasn't got a new strategy. This is the old failed strategy. It hasn't worked so he's chucked some more men and money at it.
