Can't think of any other sports which only have one country contesting the world championships.

Snooker is fairly close, only 1 non-UK winner since the 60's (Cliff Thorburn)
Sumo is almost a uniquely Japanese sport as well.
Suppose you could consider Australian Rules Football.

We Americans are thinking ahead. THink of Baseball. Its the World Series, but before it was Only the U.S.. Then Canada join in, and now Puerto Rico has half a team.

My main question is why are we letting all these foreign countries compete for the America's cup.

in America baseball,American football and basketball the winners are called the world champions not because they think they are the best in the world.
the fact is it comes from a former sponsor whose company had the word world in it so when they won they became world's champions not the champions of the world as us Brits think. the name has just stuck with it.
if you listen to the commentators you will here them say world's champion not world champion
