You have asked 2 questions - one about volume and one about the quality of the music...

Adjusting Volume:
Whichever MP3 music manager you use - maybe iTunes, there is an option in the "options" or "preferences" - there is a tick box that says level all music at the same volume during playback.

Also, there is an option which says it will rip music at the same level and this option is more suitable if you are downloading music to an iPod to then play in a hifi.

Converting files to MP3128bit:
Use an audio convertor - it will convert any music file in any format to a selected format. I recomend the one below from downloads.com with editor rating 8 out of 10. It's free and you have option to work with any music format out there AND when you convert - it can do it in batches (all at once overnight) and keep the original files (if you want) in their original source.

MP3Gain is a volume normalizer. It will also get rid of clipping issues.

I have a tutorial about it here: http://www.myspace.com/soundonthego Click on the MP3Gain link.

iTunes sound check sucks, don't use it. MP3Gain actually changes the MP3 settings within the file without any quality loss.

windows media player 9, 10 and 11 can apply volume leveling to your audio files. it is free and bult in to the operating system.

but yes other software is available if you use your browser to search the web. you might like to try www.softpedia.com or www.majorgeeks.com as a starting point, too much software to remember what they have it changes daily.
