I know that depression is a cemical imbalance. I will try and give you an example, You wake up, feel like crap, you can get up and attact the day or stay in bed and make thinks worse.
Doe you just reach a point were you can not take any more or just give in to the sercomstances.

All the anserse so far have bean fantastic, but I am speaking generaly, and the example I have was simply that. An other example would be, not so many year ago, if you did not go to work, you and them your family would simply die. When depresion was not an option, was there more or less.

I have a theory that in adults, at least....depression is anger turned inward but not expressed.

A lot of people try and pretend their ok, which makes the pressure worse and then, in turn can make the depression feel worse. Others try to be like superman, taking on far too much and when they go on burnout feel like a failure, when really they took on too much on top of depression anyway. Some others lie down and take it, everyones different and depression can show in different ways. What you describe isn't really depression, as such, unless the person felt that way every day, the person who is depressed but attacks the day can only do that for so long.

There will be a reason. Don't lie to yourself or try to live a life that doesn't make you happy. If your work is bring you down, or your girlfriend, or if you're living away from your family do something about it. It's a hard decision to make but when you've made your move you'll be liberated. Think positive thoughts... it's a cliche but it works. You're not alone, if you need to talk to someone try the samaritans or a group like them... or better still, try a friend.

If you're depressed, it doesn't matter if you stay in bed or wake up and "attack the day". You could be smiling in a crowd of happy people and still want to kill yourself.
It never ends. There's no explanation for it either. It's just there with the rest of your thoughts as if it belongs there.
You can have the crappiest day, and be okay with it. You can have the best day of your life and still be in anguish.
There's no rules, and it's definitely not fair.

No its not as simple as that
while i don't understand depression myself my son suffers with it...
its not something that is brought upon yourself , depression is neurological and not just psychological , meaning that it can be down to a chemical imbalance in the brain ... its not a case of someone giving into depression they have no choice in the matter , its there the illness is there.
going by your example, the problem is its not that they dont want to get out of bed its a case of they really cant get out of bed.

What you do physically really doesn't matter. What matters, is how you view your physical actions, and your perceptions of them on your mood. For example, while you feel that lying in bed makes depression worse, another person could feel that the same action improves their mood. Realize that you should have control of your mood, and if you are not able to stabilize it, then you may need to see a therapist.

not all depression is caused by a chemical imbalance - that is only the medical model. If you feel losy when you get up do what my friend used to do and get up straight away and go out and do something. She always felt better than if she stayed in.

I think it can work both ways.
You can feel like crap and let your self wallow in it, if you want. Or you can be proactive and seek ways to change how you feel ~ which may or may not work (for some).
In a way, it's like feeling bloody awful with having the flue, and letting yourself be what you feel ('wallowing' in it, if you like). To some, this is a negative way of being, but then I only think that if the 'wallowing' is allowed without thought.
There's nothing wrong in 'feeling sorry for the self' when the self feels bloody awful and hurts. After all, who better to feel sorry for us than ourself ~ the one entitled to be it.
In another area, that 'hurting' is in itself educational and allows us to connect with others when they feel hurt. We can experience empathy with / towards them, and that is valuable. It's valuable because, when you feel like crap and someone comes and looks at you in 'that way,' then they lay a hand on your brow and make soothing noises to you ...It really can be nice because it can in itself be healing.
There is nothing 'wrong' or negative in giving in to circumstances. The only problem in that response is when it is 'the only response we have.'

I think you are describing being down in the dumps.
I have seen me not get out of bed for days or not speak to anyone for weeks on end. It isn't a conscious decision or something you can snap out of.
