why do night crawlers come to the top of the ground at night?

for fishing purposes we use dishwashing liquid and water sprinkled on the ground then flood the spot with a water hose.

Because its cool and moist, and that's what they like :-)

Subterranean creatures like vermins and night crawlers come out of the surface because they can see above ground only at night when the surface and undeground atmosphere is similar.
