No. Don't listen to everyone but fact is, usually, the singer is the one that has to be catered to if it is going to sound right. A lot of guitarists try to run the show their way, and even if they sound good, fact is, folks want to hear the singer!!!!!

Oh and let's not foget that the band leader is the one who get's the band together, i.e. auditioning, taking care of promoting and getting gigs and divying up the cash after a successful gig.

That's funny, besides from singers not need to be the leader as in some replies, I think it's more something of a psychological phenomenom. Singers are usually the ones that attract most attention and are usually the extrovert kind of person. Therefore looking from the outside they appear to "lead" the band as they are usually the spokesperson of the band as well. Being a leader has nothing to do with your function (and that is true in general) If you as a person are a leader you can play German Flute for all I care but you would still be a leader. If the members accept that natural leadership... well.. you're in charge. I can give you a simple example. I play drums and percussion and played in several bands, founded 3 of them. In the bands I founded the "leadership" was mine because I generated the ideas (mind you, I can't write songs whatsoever) and pointed the direction in which we were going. The others, in one case 12 members, accepted that. Other bands I played in somebody else took that role, once a singer, once a guitarplayer etc. Well, I guess what I'm trying say is, it doesn't matter.... your first goal should be to have fun making music. If you really want to be a leader, take a course, found a company and be the boss :)

The band leader is the one who sets the musical agenda - the dominant composer and/or improviser in the ensemble.
Obvious examples: Pete Townshend, Noel Gallagher and Martin Gore can be considered leaders of their respective bands even though they're not the lead singers, simply because they write most of the material.

That is not true. Leader is the person who has charisma and can well manage; well organize and understand all the team member skill to achieve success and in the band he has to understand the harmonizing and blending to reach the best song performance and know how to give the best for audience.

Not necessarily. I know of a band that the 'leader' or headliner is the drummer. He stays in the back, deadpan expression, like there is no life there.... just drumming along. And grins all the way to the bank.

No. Look at Van Halen. Their singers were David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar and another dude. Pantera was formed by the Abbot brothers and they got Anselmo to be the singer.

What a load of garbage
take this one back to the airbrain that laid it on you and tell them they need to get a clue !!!
The music industry is PACKED with bands who have "front men and women" who are not even considered the band's "leader" !!
Someone is running a "thing" up on you here---lay it back on them and tell them to KNOW stuff before they SPOUT stuff !!!
