reasons men were used more on plantations

Men did heavy labor, like plowing, but both men and women worked in the fields picking cotton, etc.

Women who had infants and children too small to work were expected to either leave them with one older woman who acted as a sort of babysitter, or to bring them to the fields every day and keep them out of the way.

Some male and female slaves who were frailer or had more white blood were kept as household slaves and acted as maids and butlers.

Men did harder labor because of physical strength. Women did what ALL women did at that period of history - had babies and raised children.
