Joan and Gayle sold 89 magazines. If Joan sold one more than three times the number Gayle sold, find the number sold by Joan.

I got 67, but I am not sure if that is correct.

If you could put it in "equation" form, that would be nice also.

J = the number Joan sold
G = the number Gayle sold

J = 1 + 3G
J + G = 89

these are your two equations because you know that Joan sold 1 more (1 + ) than 3 times Gayle
and that both of them added together is 89

substituting the first equation into the second, you get:
1+3G + G = 89
1 + 4G = 89
4G = 88
G = 22

89-22 = 67

You are right!

Let no.of books sold by Joan be "x". Then no. of books sold by Gayle will be 89-(89-x)
As per the question, x = 3(89-x)+1
x = 287 -3x +1
4x = 288
x = 288/4
x = 67
Therefore, Joan sold 67 books which is one more than 3 times those sold by Gayle because Gayle sold 89-67=22.
Your answer is correct.

Let the number of mags Gayle sold be x. Then Joan sold 3x + 1 magazines.

So x + 3x + 1 = 89, or 4x + 1 = 89.
So 4x = 88, so x = 22.

Thus Joan sold 3 x 22 + 1 mags = 67.

Let the no. of magazine sold by Gayle be=x
So, no. of magazine sold by Jone = 3x+1
According to question
=> x+3x+1=89
=> 4x+1=89
=> 4x=89-1
=> 4x=88
=> x=88/4
=> x=22
Substituting the value of x in 3x+1
= 67
So Joan sold 67 magazines

Let J be Joan and G be Gayle

Therefore, from the question

J + G = 89, and
J = 3*G + 1 // Joan sold 3 times more than Gayle + 1

Therefore,
3G + 1 + G = 89
4G + 1 = 89
4G = 88
G = 22 //G = 88/4

If Gayle sold 22 magazines, then Joan sold 89 - 22 = 67

Thus, you are very much correct my friend.

89/4=22.25

if Gayle sold one quarter of 89 which equals 22.25 that would mean Joan sold the rest, which is 66.75. Now, if you round those numbers then Joan gets 67 and Gayle gets 22.
