My computer is not that old maybe just about a year. I cant recall if it was doing it before or not but it sounds like the fan is going but it is really loud. Like a humming like sound. Like maybe the fan has dust or something on it? What is it?

Oh and it will stop for a bit and then start back up with the humming sound.

when its loud it means the fan is working extra hard due to extra heat coming off the processor....aka....you are doing more on the computer, more programs open, etc.

normally most fans are quiet, barely a hum. when they start to make noise its normally a sign that its time to clean the machine. take it apart, clean it out, blow it out, vacuum it out, clean the processor fingers, the fans, etc.

if this is beyond you....any computer repair store can do it quickly and for not that much.

a clogged fan will sooner or later burn the power unit out, the motherboard, if not just over heat the system and fry it all.

if you smoke its worse and happens more often.

It could be dust, foreign object, chipped blade. Most likely the bearing in the fan is just worn out. This can cause a problem later when it finally seizes up and stops spinning. This is unpredictable and I can't tell you exactly when it will happen. I've had a fan that lasted months buzzing randomly before I replaced it to rid the noise and restore peace. It probably can go for years or it can die in a week. If its just a case fan then I wouldn't jump to replace it right away, just keep it in mind. If its a CPU fan, then better safe than sorry. To determine which is the culprit, unplug your CASE FANS ONLY and start up. If noise is gone, then its the case fans, if not then its the CPU fan. Also, If it is coming from the back it could be the power supply unit fan.

For me my fan was just touching a connecting power wire, thus an irrating humming sound. I opened up the cover moved the wires away to give me some peace of sound. Be sure to kill the dust bunnies while you clean your surfing gear. Peace to you.

It is possible that there is an excessive amount of dust, so your first step is to clean it with some compressed air. If that doesn't fix it, it may be bearings, or in the case of a bearing-less fan, the magnet. Luckily fans are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace.

if it is dell, it had happened to me before. Usually (my experience) it is time to replace the cooling fan. my office had around 4 or 5 dells, and in about one year's time, the fan should need to be replaced. i do not know for other brand. maybe it is the same if the fan came from the same manufacturer. anyway, try to contact your computer vendor and ask them about it. fans dont create sound even if it is full of dust.

the fan gets full of dust. Open it up and I bet you will find lots of dust. Blow it out as best you can and it may just go away
