W ENGINE

The W engine is an engine configuration in which the cylinder banks resemble the letter W in the same way a V engine resembles the letter V. There have been three entirely different implementations of this concept: one with three banks of cylinders, one with four banks, and one with two banks of cylinders and two crankshafts.

The Modern "four-bank" Design

The Volkswagen Group (VAG) created the first successful automotive W engine with the introduction of their W12. It combined two narrow-angle VR6 engines around a single crankshaft for a total of four banks of cylinders. For this reason, the four-bank configuration is sometimes, and more accurately, referred to as a "VV" ("vee-vee" or "double-vee") to distinguish it from the traditional three-bank "W" design.

The W-12 is used in the Volkswagen Phaeton, the Volkswagen Touareg, the Audi A8 and the Bentley Continental GT - though in the latter application, the engine has been highly modified by Bentley and fitted with twin KKK turbochargers. As a result, it produces considerably more power than the original version. The narrow (15°) angle between bank pairs makes this resemble a V12 engine, in that it has just two cylinder heads and two sets of camshafts.

OK basically it was 2 vr6 engines morphed it hard to show i could draw it for you but that's not gonna happen tonight. it crazy it worked but it was too different and not many people really seemed to care. basically its you typical German Over Engineering that and it was so uncommon and the cost did not work out if you crunch the numbers with R+D, Production and actual amount sold it was not Making those Dutch Marks like planed. but its just your basic internal combustion engine just in a wide W shape not a narrow V. its hard to explain when you cant show the person what your talking about.. hope i helped..

'V' is ta way ta cylinders in ta engine are placed...so 4 a V6 engine tere r 6 cylinders,i.e, 3 cylinders placd on either side which together form a 'V'...shw the numbr 2 on ur right hand...the two fingers together form a 'V' shape...now shw ta nmbr 2 on ur left n join the tip o ur fingers together...it bcomz a 'W'...so an engine wid ta label 'W8' has 8 cylinders in 2 rows....tat wud b 4 cylinders in 1 row..each row forming a 'W'.
