Well, she was a German princess who married the heir to the Russian throne, but very soon after her husband assumed the throne he was murdered by the Orlov brothers. Then , things happened very fast and Catherine seized power in spite of being a foreigner.
She conquered the Crimea, that so far was in the hands of the Turks, completing the dream of Peter the Great.
She had several friends, among them Grigori Potemkin, who created false villages for the czarina to see everywhere she went, creating the illusion that the Russian people was happy under her rule

She was nailing the American pirate John Paul Jones. She was very promiscuous and a pseudo-intellectual. She was not trusted by the Russian aristocracy because she was born a German princess. She renounced Lutheranism and became Russian orthodox but her life, if that is telling of what a person believes, says she did not believe in either religion.
