My pediatrician told me that at 4 months I should start rice cereal and baby food around 5 months. I was wondering what and when to move on to other foods? She's really interested in what other people are eating and I know that I have read in some places that is a sign that they are ready for food? She is sitting up on her own and crawling two feet at a time (she just started that yesterday).

My daughter started baby food fruits and rice cereal at 3 months then moved up to the baby food vegis. You can try serving her mashed foods if she seems interested. BUT at her age NEVER give her regular milk, anything with nuts, and NEVER let a child under 12 months have honey as it can cause botulism. Someone also told me to avoid strawberries as well.

I started my little girl on rice cereal at 2 1/2 months old, she was not getting enough from the formula, 7oz was not enough. I started her with rice cereal, with a spoon, and she has been doing great ever since, and now shes 4 months. The doctor was fine with it, just a tsp to start at first, I usually gave a bottle when she first woke up then her next feeding was a tsp of rice cereal mixed with her formula in a dish, and a smaller oz in her bottle for afterwards. at 3 1/2 months I started giving her rice cereal in the morning and right before bed. Shes been doing great. I would not start solid food yet, do the rice cereal for a while to get her body use to it, don't rush her.

Here is a bit of information I've found as I was considering weaning my three month old daughter..

Quote:

"when to start feeding solids:
There are a number of signs that your baby will give you when they are ready to start solids - such as showing an interest in food, chewing when you eat in front of them and the disappearance of the 'extrusion reflex'. This reflex causes babies to put their tongue forward and upwards when feeding, as if sucking, and prevents baby from taking food from a spoon. Current research indicates that, ideally, babies should be breastfed exclusively for the first six months before introducing solids. There have also been indications that starting babies on solids at too young an age can lead to food intolerances - usually caused because the baby's gut is not mature enough to digest certain foods. For further advice, speak to your child health nurse or GP."

I hope this helps. I've looked into it a bit further, and most information i've found states that babies under six months of age are far too imature for solid foods. Rice cereal seems to be okay, but mashed vegetables and fruits seems to be far to early.

Good luck! :)

I use DelMonte baby food. And they have numbers on the jars, 1, 2, 3. For her age at 6 months she can eat the number 1 jars from any brand of baby food, plus cereal (most of the boxes have numbers on them too). She can also have apple juice watered down, since it's too sweet tasting, and babies can always have water.

Each jar has a stage, and it will say next to the number what the suggested ages are for that stage.

Good Luck!

i started my son on rice cereal at 4 months then i introduced new first step baby foods one at a time three or four days apart to weed out any allergies. also i mixed the food with rice cereal at the intoduction of the food. certain foods should be avoided until 1 year like egg, and nuts. see recomendations on babycenter.com and americanbaby.com for more info on foods to hold off on. i think citrus fruits are also on the list.

Just pick a fruit and start with that I always used applesauce first. Try one food at a time ( give for several days) to see if she has any problem with that food. If not then go on to pears and then eventually to veggies. Once she has a few teeth then on to the level 2 stage foods.

Homemade /commercial Porridge (savory/sweet) can be fed to a child 3 mths plus. Just adjust the texture & content as child gets older to meet her daily nutritional requirements. Personally my daughter started eating solids at 3 mths old. Her first test was a spoonful of berry yogurt. Tip test your choice of cereal or pured food with her first. Give her a teaspoonful initially than build up to a full meal. She'll let you know if its ok. Avoid added preservatives, salt & sugar diets to minimize medical problems like allergies & obesity. Don't worry if she doesn't eat much. Babies/ children prefer to graze rather than eat 4 square meals.Always provide lots of fluid for child to drink. From theory children under 6mths old not recommended to drink water. Milk (formula/ breast milk) only plus solid food for those who are ready. eg.congee (rice porridge) is a good start for any child. It's versatile & suits most children nutritional needs. By the way carrots & other cellulose /fiber heavy food like corn & cabbage can't be digested by children under 6. I'll just come out in their stool. Once child gets older you can progress to a greater variety of food. Remember to make the food look palatable (age appropriate). If the child can pick up the food serve them finger foods like steamed broccoli florets that kind of thing. Rule of thumb pured diet for infants under 5 mths old mash food for 5 mths over & finger foods for toddlers aged 12 months plus.
