Someone told me that they have been designed to chop the toes off cleanly so that they cane be reattached easy.
i have always thought that they were designed to protect the toes from heavy object falling on them. not to chop the toes off.

They are designed to protect the toes from items that fall on them. Think about it, if an items was large enough to smash the metal to cut off your toes evenly do you really think that it would only hit that part of your boot? I don't.

HaHa..You're being would up mate. Steel toe caps are to protect your toes not chop them off. Think about it , if something that heavy fell on your toes that the toe cap buckled it would crush your toes not chop them off.
By the way do you know where i can get a skirting ladder or some sky hooks from as i've got some decorating to do .

Let me guess, you have just started working on site, and the guy looking after you likes his jokes?

Safety boots are chemical resistant, have electrically insulated soles, and steel toecaps.

So if you step on live wires, walk through a chemical spill or something drops on your foot; you'll be alright.
They work so well that without them sites are more dangerous because people forget that someone may not have boots.
I often use mind to rest a ton or so on, that way I can get purchase underneath when I need to lift it. hate to think what would happen if I ever forget to wear them.
One tip, I usually find that a size bigger is best - that steel doesn't have a lot of give.
As an Engineer I get my pick of styles from the stores - saves me money in hiking boots. Though I tend to skip and jump along when I return to trainers.

They are designed to protect the toes, not for a clean cut! In fact they saved my brother in laws toe from being crushed when he dropped a concrete block on his foot.

What idiots you listen to, you have already answered the question, so why ask it?
TO PROTECT THE TOES FROM INJURY, CAUSED BY OBJECTS FALLING ONTO, OR FROM BEING CRUSHED!
Now you know, and tell the BERK that thinks it's so that your toes can easily be reattached, to get his head out of his bum!

yes they are designed to protect your toes, from something heavy falling on your foot ,but if i was wearing them when i got my foot chrused by a commercial forklift the doctor said they probably would have cut all my toes completely off ,just because of the circumstance, of the incident , thank god ,I wasn't wearing steel toed boots.

They were meant to protect the toes of construction workers while onsite. As a matter of fact, Mythbusters had a very good episode about what your friend told toy.
