Does it take more petrol if you spend more time in the car because of traffic and lights, or, if you cover a longer distance but take less time because it is motorway driving without stops?

time burns more petrol than distance. that's why city MPG is less than highway MPG. i know from experience, drive 30,000 miles a year on the highway and monitor fuel consumption closely. my vehicle gets 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on freeway. freeway = fewer stops and acceleration changes, unlike the city where you are constantly stopping and accelerating. these are the things that are a major factor in fuel consumption.

Well if you travel the same distance, but stop and go because of traffic lights, you will use more gas. Driving a straight route without stopping will use less fuel.

If you drove for an hour in the city with traffic you would burn more miles per gallon than highway but it would depend on how much distance you would cover on the highway verses time driven in the city. I know my truck gets 13 city and 18 highway so if I averaged 25 MPH in city and 60 Mph highway I would have burned 1.9 gallons in the city and 3.3 on the highway.
Kinda like a trick question...

If you're stuck in a traffic jam, you approach 0 miles per gallon. On the other hand, you didn't say how far you will drive without stopping.

none of it matters really. it all depends on how hard u push the accerelator, the harder u press it, the more fuel its used
