There are several myths in the middle east referring to the flood. Several of them are older than the Biblical account, such as Gilgamesh. There is evidence of a huge local flood in the Middle East. There was once an isthmus between the Mediterranean (which was much larger then) and areas to the east. There is evidence that the isthmus broke through, causing a massive flood, and creating another sea (the Caspian?). Although it wasn't a worldwide flood (the writers of the Bible wouldn't have known the size of the world at the time), it was sufficient to overwhelm their world. There's not enough water in the oceans to overwhelm the Earth in a total flood.

Because they were privy to the caves and drawings on the walls from Babylon and places like that. Plus they were far advanced in Science as we have become only in the last 50 years 50 years ago we did not know half of what the Egyptian knew about life preservation, or even the chemicals used in the mumification process. One of the elements they researched for 25 years they could not detect then they found it no longer exists but they found it in the pictured flower on a tomb wall the blue lotus that used to grow on the nile, and no longer that breed of flower is around. So it is like history fades away and then it comes back. Plus there were scrolls found made of animal skin that told many tales in other dialects that were not considered languages? That is nuts if they write them down it must be a language, why we are so egotistical that ours is the only one? But when they deciphered them they found out many clues and facts in science more advanced than we ever were.

But it wasn't. The story of creation as contained in the Bible is a myth of a primitive people. It is not scientifically accurate. Read the Bible for moral and religious teachings, not as a geological or paleontological textbook.
