Sam was played by Sean Astin. Sean has been an actor since he was a child, starring in films such as "The Goonies." He has been in "Encino Man," "Rudy," "50 First Dates" and "Click" just to name a few.
Very talented guy, and he is in fact an American.

This isn't really an answer, but it Austin must really have a great sense of humor. He almost always plays characters that are undersized and not that smart. In Rudy, he barely made it into Notre Dame and barely made it onto the team. In LOTR he was a serving-class hobbit. In Click and 50 First Dates, he basically played the same character, a preening, body-obsessed, yet comically small and dim person.
