The Department of Agriculture and Food, which conducted the autopsies, has almost ruled out an infectious process.
Acting chief veterinary officer Fiona Sunderman said toxins were the most likely cause but the deaths could be due to anything from toxic algae to chemicals and pesticides

Its not Bird Flu, it is some sort of toxin, they have not yet finished testing. It happened over at Esperance, at first they thought it was something to do with the floods, but apparently it started to happen about a week before the rains came.

The latest idea is that the birds have died of thirst and heat stress. Many young kangaroos have been found dead in the same area - near Esperance in southern Western Australia.. All the ephemeral waterholes and many of the permanent ones have dried up and two periods of temperatures in excess of 40°C have killed the birds.

Don't know. Nuclear fallout from Chernobyl? thermal warming? Residue from pesticides? We tend to abuse this planet then whine because it is not friendly to us.
