The C-class is Mercedes less expensive entry-level sedan line. They are the only sedan's they offer that can come in a manual transmission or an automatic transmission. The C-class is smaller than the E's and are not as luxurious, although they are much nicer than many other small sedans like the Toyota Camry, Chevy Malibu, or Honda Accord. You can get both the C and the E-class in AMG models as well.

The C-Class is Mercedes-Benz's "Compact" sedan/estate car. Its in the same category (and a rival to...) with BMW 3-Series, Lexus IS-models i.e. IS-200, Peugeot's 306, Honda's Civic, etc. It can be as luxirous as you can afford to make it (if you have the money for the optional extras that add more value to it), the only thing is that the car is small in size. The E-Class on the other hand is bigger, more family car-like and competes with the likes of BMW 5-Series, Lexus ES/GS models i.e. ES-300, GS-300, Peugeot's 406 and 407, Honda's Accord, etc.
Basically, in today's motoring trends, there are 3 classes or categories of sedans: the compact ones, the midsize/family sedans, and those huge, ostentatious luxury "luxobarges" (as I like to call them) sometimes seen as limos or mini-limos (un-stretched).
Of course theres even more to it than what I've just mentioned...try visiting the various brand's websites for more details, theres no tellling what other details/criterion that I've not mentioned to you. What I've said so far is just to give you an idea. Cheers.
