Top male actors:
5. Harison Ford-his career has stalled a bit, but he is hitting the prime his for the older male lead. I think if he dyed his hair convincingly (too much gray in the tabloid photos) he would have his choice of parts. Looking foreward to Indiana Jones 4 and until then watching "Air Force One", "K-19 The Widowmaker", and "Presumed Innocent."
4. Russle Crowe-outstanding roles and the Oscar for "A Beautiful Mind" are keeping him golden. He just needs to control the bad publicity.
3. Paul Gimatti-the perfect everyman. Not quite a leading man material in the traditional sense, but he is a utility player and can handle main roles quite well. Outstanding in "Cinderella Man" and "Sideways".
2. Tom Hanks-he is a great actor with well deserved Oscars (especially "Forrest Gump") to prove it. Unfortunately, he is in a transition appearance-wise. Look for more voice work for animated films in the short run or another turn at directing; at least until Hollywood figures out what to do with him.
1. Denzel Washington-what can be said about him? Outstanding! Phenominal! When was the last time you were disappointed in one of his performances? "John Q" ,"Philadelphia" and "Man On Fire" are his best films
Not quite the top 5 list:
Micheal Keaton-fantastic actor who fell out of the Hollywood scene. He can do it all ("Pacific Heights", "Desperate Measures", & "Multiplicity"), but did he have to do "Herbie Fully Loaded"? Still a great actor and he can give Tom Hanks a run for the money if he really tries.
Denis Quaid-his southern drawl limits his roles somewhat, but a solid name in the industry. Great in "The Rookie", "Big Easy" and "Great Balls Of Fire."
Eddie Murphy-he needs to prove himself in more serious roles. As a comedian he is still one of the best, even if he has toned down the material.
His early comedies "48 Hours", "Coming To America" and "Beverly Hills Cop" are still his best; but "Daddy Day Care" and especailly "Shrek" are well worth watching.
Clint Eastwood- better director than actor these days, but he can still turn in a good performance in front of the camera.
Mel Gibson-despite his 2006 problems with the law and racial slurs, he is still one of the best in the industry. His work behind the camera has been fantastic as well. Look for an eventual comeback in front of the camera in 2008.
Brad Pitt-Good looking, but needs more good roles to beconsidered a heavyweight. Still he is grabbing the attention of all the gossip columns right now.
Jason Statham-For bad-boy-action-hero there is none better. Outstanding in "The Transporter." He needs to work more on his comedic timing and dramatic roles. Perhaps should have been given the role of James Bond; but considering the characted development in "Casino Royale," he just did not have the range yet. Very good in "Snatch" and "Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels."
(Craig,) Daniel Craig-a relative newcomer to Hollywood's attention, he does an excellent job as the new James Bond. Fantastic performance in "The Layer Cake" as the drug dealer who wants out of the business-even if his character has no name.
--------------
Top 5 female actors
5. Julia Roberts-seems doomed to the romantic comedies, but has made some good serious movies as well. Just needs the right vehicle to get another Oscar. Still one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood and for good reason.
4. Angelina Jolie-get out of the tabloids and into the studio, please. You have box office appeal but that won't last forever. I am not a fan of her work, but I did like "Mr & Mrs Smith".
3. Scarlet Johanson-quite the actress. Watch her in "The Perfect Score" and "Girl With The Pearl Earring."
2. Demi More-a great looking woman who can do just about anything. Great in "G.I. Jane" and "Striptease" two opposites in the acting range.
1. Susan Sarandon-solid performances ever since "Atlantic City", but her best work is in "Dead Man Walking", "Bull Durham" and "The Client."
Ready to move into the Top 5:
Jodie Foster ("Contact")
Kate Beckendale ("Underground" & "Serendipity")
Keira Knightley ("Bend It Like Beckham" & "Pirates Of The Caribbean")
Ziyi Zhang ("House Of Flying Daggers" & "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon")

Here is my list. My picks are based on longevity within the business, versatility as an actor, impeccable acting, what I call "facial" acting (as opposed to mere physicality), ability to make an audience *feel* what the character feels, ability to carry a movie, and ability to draw an audience (or "star power").
The movies I've listed behind each name demonstrate all of the above, especially versatility. The characters are all so vastly different. Plus, they just happen to be my favorite movies amongst these fine actors. I'd recommend watching every movie here.
Males:
Al Pacino - Donnie Brasco, Heat, Scarface, Scent of a Woman, The Insider, The Godfather
Denzel Washington - Malcolm X, Training Day, Glory, John Q, The Hurricane, The Bone Collector, Crimson Tide
Tom Hanks - Cast Away, Apollo 13, Philadelphia, The Terminal, Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump
Morgan Freeman - Shawshank Redemption, Million Dollar Baby, Driving Miss Daisy, Amistad, Seven
Edward Norton - Primal Fear, American History X, Fight Club, 25th Hour, The Italian Job, The Score
Females:
Cate Blanchett - Elizabeth, An Ideal Husband, The Gift, Bandits, Veronica Guerin, Lord of the Rings
Nicole Kidman - The Hours, To Die For, The Portrait of a Lady, Cold Mountain, Moulin Rouge, The Others, The Interpreter
Meryl Streep - The Hours, Manchurian Candidate, The River Wild, Sophie's Choice, Bridges of Madison County, Death Becoms Her, Out of Africa, Postcards from the Edge
Julianne Moore - The Hours, The Forgotten, Far From Heaven, Magnolia, Benny and Joon, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle
Judi Densch - Mrs. Brown, Shakespeare in Love, Chocolat, Pride and Prejudice, Hamlet, Ladies in Lavender, The Importance of Being Ernest, Iris
P.S. Hey franklinf......NICE LIST!! I couldn't agree more. And I thought I was the only person who's ever seen "Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are Dead." Gary Oldman was hilarious in that! (Love him, too.) Tim Roth is amaaazing! Loved him in "Rob Roy," too. He was so evil, yet so nuanced that you actually felt a little sorry for the poor guy. Nothing better than an actor who can portray something other than one dimension.
Your picks could definitely be on my list!
HIGH FIVE!!

This is really hard to narrow it down to just 5 a piece! There are so many fantastic actors out there...some still in the spotlight, others who have faded gently into the background. But if I had to choose my favorites out of those whom I think are tops, this is who I'd choose...
Men:
Denzel Washington - Malcolm X, Training Day (two radically different roles. Both superbly acted. Nominated for Oscar in MX and won an Oscar for TD)
Sean Penn - 21 Grams, I Am Sam (powerfully moving performances. A highly underrated actor...and I think he likes it that way.)
Russell Crowe - Gladiator, Cinderella Man (tough-guy roles, but beautifully nuanced performances. Tough and vulnerable..not easy to play)
Robert DeNiro - Awakenings, This Boy's Life (method acting at its finest)
Anthony Hopkins - Silence of the Lambs, Shadowlands (from psychopath to Christian author/philosopher...he's flawless)
Women:
Cate Blanchett - Elizabeth, Bandits (She plays serious and quirky with equal aplomb. And nobody has a more chameleon like face)
Hilary Swank - Boys Don't Cry, Million Dollar Baby (Who'd have guessed this lovely actress could have convincingly pass as a boy and a boxer?! Remarkable)
Nicole Kidman - The Hours, Far and Away (She's beautiful AND she can act!)
Charlize Theron - North Country, Monster (I thought she was just another pretty face til I saw these two movies. Boy was I wrong! She's unbelievable...)
Frances McDormand - Fargo, North Country (She moves from comedy to drama at the drop of a hat. I love this woman. She's just brilliant!)
Also-Rans:
Paul Newman, Morgan Freeman, Tim Roth, Brad Pitt, Ed Norton, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Clint Eastwood, Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day Lewis, Paul Giamata, Tom Hanks, Gary Oldman, Tim Robbins, Jack Nicholson, Billy-Bob Thornton, Mel Gibson
Glenn Close, Diane Keaton, Cathy Bates, Annette Bening, Kate Winslet, Jodi Foster, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Holly Hunter, Jessica Lange, Kristin Scott Thomas, Robin Wright-Penn, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightly, Susan Sarandon

My fave actors.....
Tim Roth...the man can play anything....he's a mimic....look at him in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead....and then in Gridlock'd
Jeff Bridges.....He's so subtle....you can;t even tell he;s acting (which is why he's so often overlooked)...but look at how many power house operformances he;s given.....Fearless.....Baker Boys....Big Lebowski.....Tucker..man and his dream....Fisher King....
Jude Law...another who can do almost anything.....he sold me in Existenz....I rarely saw one actor show so much in one film.
Kevin Kline....what can't this man do? From Fish called wanda to drama...he;s consistently excellent.
Ed Norton Jr....he choses some crap to be in....but he's always great in that crap.....I was sold on him from people vs Larry flynt
Now the ladies.....
Jodie Foster.....she's falling off..especially in role selection...but she's excellent. There haven't been too many performances as striking as what she did in The Piano.
judi Densch.....from Bond's boss to Elizabeth....she portrays strength and character like few others.
Kristin Scott Thomas....humour...sardonic wit.....drama....does it all....Bitter Moon was a tour de force for her.
I actually love Kirsten Dunst.....she gives very nuanced performances....it sounds silly but she ROCKS in SPider Man...eternal sunshine sold me...
Finally.....Frances mcdormand.......She's married to a coen which gets cool points right off...she's another one that can play anything....compare her as the seductress in short cuts....the frightened neurotic in blood simple....the everyman officer mom in fargo....she rocks.
