if they're acting normal I sugarcoat it but if they're getting my nerves I tell it like it is.

See me personally I would bluntly say it so that why it cannot be misunderstood and taken another way but everyone who knows me knows I will tell you how it is and expect the same in return. It just depends on how your friend is though I mean if they are sensitive what have you then sugarcoat it a little bit

They do need to know the TRUTH, but there's nothing wrong with a little "sugar" with it. I mean, what's the point in hurting someone's feelings? Being too blunt is just not worth hurting a loved one's feelings....

You can be honest and straightforward without being blunt or frosted. Just speak earnestly, and the other person will usually pick up on your true intentions.

How bizarre. Why would you try on emotions before telling them? Why don't you just say what you feel, and it'll come out the way you intend. I'm answering your question because I think you might be from mars. No offense if I'm off target on that last bit.

Usually this sort of thing is done ONLY by a Mother, Wife or a Lover - people who loves you too much to care for you.And most often they' ve YOUR best interest in mind...so, why this fuss ?? I would rather feel loved & cared that atleast there is someone who is Honest with me...

This would depend on how much you have invested in this friendship and whether or not you want to continue to maintain it. Try the sugar coating and if it doesn't work you may have to be more up front. However you have to remember that people don't always see what they do as faults and she may be insulted that you don't appreciate her caring and looking after you.

Being blunt doesn't mean you have to hurt their feelings. Just state your opinion, make your voice heard. And, figure things out like real friends do.

There is an in-between. You can say exactly what you think without being ugly, but not necessarily sugarcoating it.
How about..."I know you mean well and I appreciate it, but I really need to (insert action here) on my own, but I will ask if I need you."

well usually you should "suggarcoat" this, but in this case, if it is about your liberty, and stopping them from telling them what to do, tell them straight what you think. they will feel better this way , and you won't leave the conversation with the feeling that you have missed something
cheers
