Ugh. Cobain was a good musician. He wasn't the originator of grunge, and there were many more important musicians from those early 90s years. It was sad to see him die, but he was hard into drugs, and his time would have come sooner rather than later. His reputation has grown so much since he died, much like Biggie and Tupac's reps blew sky high. They're all talented, but vastly overrated. Besides, I was young-ish when he died, so I didn't. If he was alive up to now and died today, I probably wouldn't.

Now, if Kevin Shields or Frank Black or any of The Smiths died, I'd shed a tear.

So true about Nirvana being a better marketed pixies. It seems whenever there's a new music scene somewhere that's just about to hit big, a label swoops up a pretty talented band and makes them huge, instead of more of the key players.
For me, it's rare to see anyone who knows who Fugazi, the Pixies, Can, Kraftwerk, Tom Waits, and even The Smiths and Joy Division. Yet those bands really helped push along modern music as we know it and don't get public attention.

I was...3 when he died. But I cry every time I see a video or hear a Nirvana song...:(

"Kurt Cobain killed himself today. He was just too pure for this world."
"Well, at least his music will live on, right?"

Note for those who blame Courtney for his heroin addiction... As a child he was prescribed Ritalin for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. "When you're a kid and you get this drug that makes you feel that [euphoric] feeling, where else are you going to turn when you're an adult?"(Courtney Love). Plus all his bad influences not only from the rock'n'roll world, but from his adolescence. Come on, be serious! Can you name a rock star who didn't use drugs?!

I didn't cry. I liked Nirvana...they were no Pixies or anything.....but he chose to kill himself. He left behind a child. He ultimately chose to be a drug addict, and he chose to kill himself. Hard for me to feel that badly for him. I remember when he died I did a radio show tribute (I was a college DJ at the time) to him on my next show....and what struck me after playing 3 straight hours of his stuff was that he really was just a better marketed Pixies. He even said so if I recall. I still will listen to a Nirvana tune every now and again....but there were SO MANY better bands out then them. Dinosaur Jr, Husker Du, Sebadoh, Superchunk....etc. etc. etc. etc.

For Adam A......great answer to this question and to mine.....if/when Frank black dies i'll shed a tear.

I can't really think of too many celebrities I've cried for. Joe Strummer....Frank Zappa.....Johnny Cash....Phil Hartman.....

I didn't cry - I liked Nirvana at the time and still do, though.

Honestly, though, I think they are overrated. As far as bands of that generation, they don't even compare to Sublime or the Chili Peppers.

Well, I was only 4, but if I had been older, I probably would have. Did you?

And I disagree with the guy a few things above this. If someone kills themselves, its because they're hurting inside. That's why I have sympathy for them

Courtney Love when she read the letter. I would have to but I was at the age where I would have been more upset if Levar Burton died.

so your asking this question because you most likely did and don't want to feel silly so you want to see if your not the only one....well dear my darling husband probably did he is a big fan but man how can you feel sorry for someone who died because of drug use........theres tons of actors and musicians out there killing themselves because of drugs and pressure from the media.

I was happy, thank god one less talentless so called musician... yes he coule write a lyric i give him that but his music was horrible and no meaning and no real talent.

and i wish people stop with the admiration of him , and also saying courtney love killed him......he did it to himself, it's all part of a self destructive mode...it was just a matter of time before he offed himself
