After you have the malware out of the system (are you sure ?) then you should run a freeware program called winsockfix

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml

Many infections modify your network stack, so this usually fixes things up.

After you run this and reboot, bring up a command prompt and type in
ipconfig / release
ipconfig/ renew

Make sure your stack is running and you are getting served a DHCP address from your router, or ISP.

If you get errors here, or 'media disconnected' then boot your original OS CD (XP assumed), do a second level Repair on your system (Second Repair option, not the first).

It could be a corrupted network card driver. Go to Control Panel > System. Click Device Manager under Hardware. Expand Network Adapters and locate your network / wireless card(s). Right click and uninstall each of them. Then go to Action menu and select Scan for hardware changes. This will put them back on. Now, try the connection again.. If does not help, reinstall the TCP/IP protocol.
