epiphones sg isn't bad but epiphones in general dont have a great sound. a gibson sg would be better but a les paul would be better. It also depends on what sort of hard rock sound you are after. if you want more of a metal hard rock sound i would use a steve vai or joe satriani signature ibanez. but what you need most of all is a zakk wilde overdrive pedal/switch, it makes any guitar sound so much harder and doubled with a gibson sg (it should work with your epiphone) it sounds awesome. you will get a nice deep hard sound

SG is not bad, but a bit old-fashioned. Ibanez RGTs, RGs and many Jacksons are shreddin' machines, with Ibanez RG1570 or 2570 being my next buy (probably 1570 because I want to install my own DiMarzio pickups, Evolutions most likely). That's basically the Steve Vai model, sans monkey grip and hippy decorations which I hate anyway.
