Well, firstly I have assumed two things - that you are talking about urban India, i.e., cities; and about people who does or assist in domestic chores like the maid, cook, driver etc. The first thing you need to appreciate is their background - from where do they come from? They mostly are migrants from improvished rural areas, and have come in search of better income and living conditions. Unfortunately, most of them reside in slums or shanties. These are environmentally degraded areas and lacks provision of basic amenities like drinking water or toilets. So the first problem is adverse environment which effects health and productivity. Secondly, being illiterate and poor, they are not aware of opportunities and lack access to information. Thre are many govt.-aided and NGO schemes for them but the poor are unaware of how to access these. Thirdly, it is the way the other citizens view them - as a problem! The poor contribute nearly 50 % of the urban GDP. Also remember, on average 30 percent of India's urban population live in slums; and this number is growing (for Mumbai, its close to 50 %)! So if the city does not think for one-third of its citizens, soon the poor will over take the city!

Primary problem would be working hours vs. pay.
Some domestic workers are exploited and underpaid (ie. below the breadline);
others who live on premises aren't allowed to have their family live with them or visit them;
It really depends on the country where the domestic is working as to the problems they face.
Key problem of domestics is that they are generally undereducated and thus open to abuse.

I have a girl who comes in and cleans 3 times a week. I've had many house keepers. One was so short she could only clean the bottom half of my rooms. Another would eat my leftovers. so I fired her. One of them would fold my toilet paper and put a paper band around the toilet! I miss her, she was great. looked like the woman who worked in my high school cafeteria. Once, one of them made tons of long distance calls to guatemala. Fortunately, I discovered this before I paid her and deducted every red cent and then fired her. One of them boiled my bed linens in my pasta pot on the stove. I have no idea what that was about. One of them would charge me for cleaning supplies, and then use my white vinegar to clean the entire house. She'd top that off with a spritz of lemon scented airfreshener. As the day would wear on, the scent would wear off leaving my house smelling like vinegar. One of them used something like lemon pledge on a 400 year old chinese laquered cabinet and destroyed it. I sued her and won, because I told her not to touch it. I'm at home most of the time when they come in, but sometimes I'm not. I'm always there when they are new. It's best of you supply everything. It's so shanty to have the poor thing lugging a vacuum cleaner up the steps. If you don't like them its fun to reenact scenes from Mommie Dearest with them, and then fire them. Remember, No wire hangers!!!
