My friends and I were talking about this and couldn't get an answer. I know if the starting goalie gets hurt that the backup goalie goes in, but what happens if the backup goalie gets hurt also? I don't know if this has ever happened or even if its likely to happen but I was just curious. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This situation has occurred. I cannot remember the year but many years ago likely in the 1930s or 40s. When a second goaltender is injured a player from the existing starting lineup can don the goalpads. A team may also dress a new goaltender if that player is elgible. (See quote from NHL rulebook)
"Except when both goalkeepers are incapacitated, no player in the playing roster in that game shall be permitted to wear the equipment of the goalkeeper".
"In regular League and Playoff games, if both listed goalkeepers are incapacitated, that Team shall be entitled to dress and play any available goalkeeper who is eligible. This goalkeeper is eligible to sit on the player's bench, in uniform. No delay shall be permitted in taking his position in the goal, and he shall be permitted a two-minute warm-up. However, the warm-up is not permitted in the event a goalkeeper is substituted for a penalty shot".

The team would be forced to play 5on6 hockey for the rest of the game unless they have a third goalie dressed.

Another thing they can do is have one of the players put the goalie pads on, but it has to be one of the players that was rostered to play. That situation has never happened in the big leagues as far as I know.

JayStew has the best, most acurate answer to this question, but I wonder if this ever has ocurred. I remember a commentator talking about a third goalie once but it was some years ago. I am thinking it has happened in the last 10 years...? Hmmmm

Honestly.. here's the answer ( I am a Jr. Hockey ,Level 4 Official)
When the goaltender is injured and the injured players team does not have a replacement goaltender, the team may put a Forward or Defense player in as his replacement. The catch though is he has 15 minutes to change into the goaltenders equipment. He can wear all of it, but he has to wear at least the Certified helmet, catching glove, blocker and he has to use the goaltenders stick. Once this player has "assumed " the position and responsibility of a goaltender he may not play any other position on the ice. These are Hockey Canada Rules which may differ slightly from the NHL rule. But in our everyday case Hockey Canada is where we read rules from.

In the Nhl most teams have a third string goalie. Usually that would not happen but it has. But the third goalie has never got taken out.

They usually have a third string goalie ready as a back-up somewhere in the building during international play like the Olympics and s/he will get dressed once the first back-up is in.

Another player can go on the ice, but they are not officially a goalie, therefore that can get hit and checked like a regular player.

all teams have an emergency goalie..usually a defenseman...he may only dress in event of injury not because of poor play.

Well.... I think that they have a goalie in there farm team that will come up.... like Toronto maple leafs have Justin Pogge, if Razor and Aubin were both hurt they'd probaly bring him up...... That's what I think anyway!!!
