Once diagnosed, the person will always have it. They need to wear a medic-alert bracelet and take anti-seizure medication to lower the seizure threshold. There are certain things they cannot do anymore because of risks of having another seizure, such as driving a car. Even though they may never have another seizure in there, there is no guarantee that it will never happen and the risk is too great.

Epilepsy is a generic term that covers all sorts of seizure disorders, of which 75 percent are from unknown causes. Many of the causes of seizures can be temporary and resolve itself over time. As long as a focal area has not developed or a scaring in the central nervous system, when the underlying cause is resolved, seizures will go away. Young children can have seizures, from high fevers for instance, that eventually go away as the brain matures. Though more and more is being understood about epilepsy we are a far way from understanding all cases. Most seizure disorders these days can be controlled at least by medications and for the most difficult cases there are surgical procedures that can relieve the symptoms.
I have never heard of seizures returning after they went away, but of course if something new caused seizures, then they could come back as part of a different condition.

Yes and yes.

Basically, once you have it - you are always more prone to it than others. It's a forever diagnosis.

A friend of mine has had hers under control for several years now with medication, but she also knows that certain things can trigger her - and that she will always have to be careful.

Aside from that, she lives a fairly normal life.

Best of luck!
