The rock man. I know it sounds strange but at the end of our street there was a culdesac with this two story house where "the rock man" lived. As kids we'd go over and ring the door bell and this voice would come over the intercom "what do you want?" we'd say "I want a polished rock" then from the balcony this bucket would come down attached to a string and you reach in and there would be a shiny polished rock. Looking back it was rather creepy, we never actually saw the rock man, ever, not even coming or leaving his house, just some weirdo who liked polished river rocks.

I was friends with almost everyone on the block and when it rained we'd go into the field behind our houses and get totally covered in mud and most of the time lose at least one of our rubber boots in the process. Our dads would have to go searching for them and usually get sucked into the mud themselves and we would all gather in someones backyard and get hosed off by someones ticked off mother. It was great, those were the days....sigh.

Being allowed to be gone all day long. My daughter longs for the chance to "do like you did in the old days, never have to come home until you were ready, you could go anywhere, wow". She's pretty right, poor thing.

She became my best friend. We have since grown apart. We live in different cities. But it's great because when we do see each other we can pick up where we left off. Our moms became best friends as well.

Riding my bike around with all my friends. It used to be so safe. And also there was a great tree we used to sit in and a stray dog that we all loved. Memories..
