They made very nice tents and very flashy weapons. They also slowed down the voracious imperialism of Europe. I'm speaking of the end of empire. They were probably very good at the beginning, It also speaks well of a professional, castrated, meritocracy running things, and leaving the art, poetry, and religious enthusiasms to upper orders.
