Okay after calling the company they told us the only thing it could be was the fan that cools the laptop was not operating properly. But I was reading some info on computers and some of the other problems we've been having with it, overheating, shutting off randomly, and not booting up all the time, or starting to boot up and then staying at the black screen. I have read that it could be motherboard problems? I don't know anything about motherboards, although I have the feeling that it controls the computer :s Okay so if it is the motherboard is it expensive to replace, does the whole thing need to be replaced or can parts of it be salvaged. We have a 3 year warrenty through Bestbuy and we are still well within those limits but I don't know if that is something that is covered. Help! I am so confused.....

Here is a comprehensive answer.

Overheating in your computer may cause your computer to shutdown automatically, as well as any unprotected static electricity shocks.

If its overheating, and you continuously persist using it after it goes black, or if the protection system was malfunctioning and did not shut your computer down, then the motherboard IC's will be burned, rendering the motherboard useless.

Static shocks can also burn the IC's and rendering them useless.

Your warranty will definitely provide coverage and free repair.

Bottom line with electronics is that overheating causes damage. If you keep trying to use the computer even though the cooling fan most probably is not working then you will end up with a very expensive paper weight.

If it is overheating and you didn't drop it or spill liquids on it then it is most probably covered by warranty. Stop trying to use it unless you absolutely have to and get it serviced at Bestbuy then! The longer you use it the more damage you cause. Also, the sooner you get it serviced the sooner you get it back.

Oh yes, your Best Buy warranty will cover the mother board but don't hold your breath waiting for it to come back to you. They take it and send it somewhere and 4-6 weeks before they return it. I will never buy another Best Buy extended warranty. Very big rip off. But, they will return it fixed so go ahead and cash in. You can also tell them it is used for important business and they may give you only 3-4 weeks. Depends on where you are located.

Laptop's can be rather troublesome. And from your delima, it seems that you got the black screen of death which could be a possible Motherboard problem and battery problem. Since, you are w/in warranty then, you need to take it back to Best Buy ASAP.
