because in society women from a young age are taught that other women are competition.
girls are told we have to be this and that to gain anything- especially when it comes to to getting men. since other females want what we want, we have to be better than them.
there can be no real friendship there
there's a book on this called 'beauty myths : how they are used against women' look on amazon, I may have the title in the wrong order

Depends on the culture you are in. My world, my culture, my friends, are not like that at all. We are like a family: we care about each other deeply, go out of our way frequently, get annoyed with others' shortcomings, sometimes b****, but always and forever, are linked.
Remember, we never rise above the level of 'human beings'. Men are no better or worse than women. We ALL gossip, carp, backstab, p*** and moan, and sometimes argue. But we keep coming back to each other, don't we?

Women do bond with each other. The term "Male Bonding" was conceived as a way of debasing Men's contact with each other in the hope that by vilifying Us We would become more open to communicating with Women. Seems to have backfired slightly. Men are now more inclined to talk to each other over a beer rather than share with a Woman who is just as likely to 'share' Our secrets over with Her friends over coffee.

I don't know what circles you travel in because you're wrong that there "is no female bonding". You know a few women who are a certain way, but they don't represent all the mature, well adjusted, women and girls who share a tremendously healthy and strong relationship with their girlfriends, sisters, mother, grandmother, or other women in their lives.

Psychological studies have shown that women do establish much closer relationships with other women than men do with other men. Men's friendship is more of a "surface" relationship, and so they don't "take things to heart" as much. (Perhaps). Because women's bonds tend to be closer, their relationships are more complicated. (Perhaps). Those are just my guesses, anyway. But, from what I've read, it is true that women form closer bonds.

I'm not sure if this counts, but my mum is my best friend and we would never backstab or b-i-t-c-h about each other. Women that do this to each other are not real friends. HTH : )
